Jose Mourinho was adamant Scott McTominay has earned his opportunity to replace Paul Pogba at the heart of his Manchester United midfield.
The France international was axed from the starting line-up for Saturday’s game against Huddersfield following a disappointing performance in the midweek defeat against Spurs at Wembley, during which he was involved in a heated touchline discussion with his manager shortly before he was taken off.
Mourinho made four changes in total, the headline pick being to promote teenager McTominary who had only started one other Premier League match this season. ‘I play Scott McTominay. He arrived here aged nine years old and spent many years in the academy, he has been waiting for an opportunity which I give him now and again, today is another one,’ the United manager said.
The game is important for us because we need points to be the first of the last (after Manchester City). We have to try to finish second. ‘We’re doing better than last season and it’s very important for us to do better than last season. We are trying to win something this season, and if not, we will try to be stronger for next season.’
